The von Karman Postdoctoral Instructorship Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics
The Computing and Mathematical Sciences (CMS) department at Caltech announces an opening for the "von Karman Postdoctoral Instructor in Applied and Computational Mathematics" starting Fall 2018. Caltech's CMS Department is a unique environment, focusing on applied mathematics, computer science and allied fields, emphasizing fundamentals and methodology, the interactions between areas, and the role these fields play in advancing science and engineering more broadly.
The von Karman Postdoctoral Instructorship is open to candidates showing exceptional promise in research and instruction, and we invite applications from researchers in all areas of applied mathematics and statistics including (but not limited to) machine learning, numerical analysis, optimization, probability, scientific computing, signal processing, and uncertainty quantification. We also invite applications from researchers who have demonstrated strong connections between computational mathematics and applications in science and engineering. The instructorship is offered as a two-year position, and, depending on mutual interests, may be extended to a third year. Candidates are expected to contribute to teaching in the department, as well as pursue research. The teaching requirement consists of 2-3 quarters per year with the subject matter mutually agreed upon to provide a balance between departmental needs and research interests of the candidate.
Click here to apply. A CV; a statement of teaching (addressing interests, experiences, and approaches to a diverse student population); and research statement are required. Applicants must also arrange for three confidential letters of reference, one of which should address teaching. Applications will be reviewed starting December 1, 2017.
Positions are contingent upon completion of an accredited PhD program.
