Towards Smart Low-Carbon Electricity Networks: State-of-the-Art and Challenges Ahead
The increasing and future adoption of small-to-medium scale low carbon technologies such as wind power, photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles and electric heat pumps poses significant technical and economic challenges particularly on electricity distribution networks – an infrastructure designed to have limited or no controllability and hence largely unmonitored. Therefore, to facilitate the decarbonisation of our power systems whilst limiting costly traditional reinforcements, distribution networks need to go through unprecedented changes to become more flexible and intelligent so network elements (including new ones such as storage) and participants (those that consume, generate or do both) can be adequately managed. This is the backbone of Smart Grids.
This presentation will provide an overview of the state-of-the-art industrial and academic Smart Grid research activities carried out by Prof Ochoa in the UK and Australia. The presentation will also address the bigger picture of future distribution networks and their interactions with the wider power system, focusing on the research challenges in terms of complexity, scalability and proof-of-concept.
